„A nation's rejoicing, in the sparks of the light of salvation, will raise up again what was destroyed by needless weeping.”From Meged Yerachim, Av

We are now in the Nine Days, which mark mourning and destruction in Judaism. The Midrash explains the root of this period, which came in the wake of the sin of the spies: "You wept a needless weeping; I will establish for you a weeping for the generations." It is precisely the reaction of weeping and fear and the loss of hope that create a state of lack in the world. In the sin of the spies the people felt small before their enemies — "we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes." When we broadcast weakness and fear before our enemies, they win. So it was also with the destruction of the Temple — "a ruined house I destroyed." We are the ones who cause the destructions, and we are the ones able to rebuild them. "A nation's rejoicing in the sparks of the light of salvation" — our joy at the redemption; our seeing of the good — "will raise up again what was destroyed by needless weeping" — will cause to sprout anew and rebuild all our ruins.
