8 September 2024 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

„When it arises in a person's heart to return in complete repentance,…”

„When it arises in a person's heart to return in complete repentance, and to repair... let his heart not fall within him from the fact that he is alarmed by the multitude of iniquities that have become more perceptible to him.”From Orot HaTeshuvah VIII, 16

When we begin a journey of repair, we begin to understand the need for it. *"For as long as a person is pursued... he does not feel his sins so much, and sometimes he does not feel them at all, and behold he is righteous in his own eyes"* – for when we live our everyday life, without a world of repair, we are sure that we are excellent. But when the journey of repair begins, *"immediately the light of the soul is revealed, and through the light his whole soul is examined before him, and he sees all its stains, and his heart worries within him in great trembling over the smallness of his wholeness and the depth of his fall."* Suddenly we discover our flaws and understand our deep need for repair. And that is dispiriting. And the Rav strengthens us: *"this seeing and the worry that comes with it – these are the very best signs, heralding for him eternal salvation in the repair of the soul..."* This is proof that we are on the right path, that we are repairing. It is not a journey of pleasures, but it is a journey whose results will be, for us, a delight.
