The Repair Along the Way
„And so much greater is the measure of good than the measure of retribution, that it is worth enduring all the sufferings of the shattering.”From Shemonah Kevatzim I:244
It does not often happen that I hesitate whether to post a piece or not. About this one I hesitate. The Rav's words here seem, ostensibly, disconnected from the situation. Would any of us want to endure the sufferings of shattering? But in my humble opinion the intent is not to belittle suffering. The Rav knew suffering without end - his wife who passed away, his daughter who passed away, the cancer that spread through his body and caused his death, and this apart from the burden of the community and the period. But when we know that the world is full of lights, and the vessels are at times too small to contain them, and when we do not know how to enlarge the vessels they shatter, and new, larger and stronger vessels replace them - then we can understand a little of the essence of the shattering and the repair within it.
