„The entire foundation of the Exodus from Egypt was to wage war against the coarse nature of life.”From Olat Re'iyah 39
The departure of the people of Israel from Egypt is truly wondrous. After all, the Holy One, the all-powerful God, could have performed a miracle - exactly like the splitting of the sea or the plague of darkness - and simply transported the people of Israel from Egypt to the Land of Israel. Why did this not happen? The power of a person, his control over his life, and the very concept of "choice" are fundamental and basic to the world. And in order to leave Egypt, the people of Israel had to undergo a process ready to break free from the addiction to slavery. Slavery is addictive, and in order to leave it we must undergo a deep process in our lives. The Exodus of Israel from Egypt, the shocking miracles along the way, the harsh plagues, and the immense loss the people suffered in the process of Egypt and on the road to the Land of Israel, constituted a gateway to the possibility of the eternal people returning to its land. In the view of that generation, it is terrible. In the view of eternity, it is the path to redemption.
