„Repentance comes after understanding, when one strengthens the recognition of the good, which comes in its fullness together with the recognition of evil.”From Orot HaTeshuvah 9, 9

Sin is the result of a negative domino effect: a weakness that causes a fall, a collapse, emotional difficulty, and so on. Repentance and repair originate in the point of understanding: internalizing good and evil and acting in the light of this insight. Among other things, it is understanding the difference between what we crave and what is good for us.
