„And the primary repentance, which illuminates the darkness at once, is that a person return to themselves, to the root of their soul, and immediately they will return to God, to the soul of all souls.”From Orot HaTeshuvah 15, 10
The month of Elul is at the door, the month in which Rav Kook was born and passed away, a month of preparation, anticipation, and renewal. One of Rav Kook's great innovations lies in his understanding of the essence of repentance and repair. The central repair, the Rav explains, is not to become what we are not, but what we were born to be, what lies in our essence. Unlike what we merely crave, this is an infinite depth of understanding of what is truly good for us: to advance ourselves, and thereby the world, with the gifts we received from the Holy One, and to do so in the best possible way. May it be a good month!
