„The great spiritual questions that were once resolved only for the great and the exceptional must now be resolved, in various degrees, for the whole people.”From Eder HaYakar, p. 144
The world has advanced, and we are in a generation of knowledge—a generation with opinions and understandings, a wise generation.
What was once the province of the great is today the province of the whole. Therefore, for example, the study of the inner dimension of the Torah, which once belonged to rabbis and to the great alone, belongs today to broad layers of the people.
Many people from all publics and all sectors ask and seek an answer. They seek to delve deeper. And because of this, hard questions arise into the air.
The greatness of the multitude lowers the uniqueness of the individuals. If once a rabbi was a complete authority and every word of his was a truth not to be examined—today, in most places, matters no longer appear that way.
The ability of everyone to engage in everything also brings dangers. We must know, on the one hand, to be wary of the danger, and on the other hand, not to be afraid to engage in great matters.
