Rosh Chodesh Av

„From the outer aspect, of all the days of destruction there is no day whose curse is not greater than that of the day before it; but from the inner aspect, the world is continually being perfumed and made sweet.”From Shemonah Kevatzim I, 669

When everything breaks on the outside, new powers begin to sprout from within. This is one of the deep movements to which Rav Kook connects us in countless passages – the world can appear weaker and more corrupted, and at that very same time the souls within it are growing and expanding. Rosh Chodesh Av and the period of the 'Three Weeks' remind us that the destruction is real, but alongside this it is truly not the end of the road. Precisely out of the brokenness are built the powers that will make possible the next edifice, and on the day of destruction the Messiah is born. So too in our own lives. There are periods in which, on the outside, we are less successful, less joyful, less certain. But precisely then a deep process is taking place within, one we cannot yet see. A good month!
