When the Vision Falls
„And precisely because the vision failed in its time, and Bar Kochba fell, and with him Israel fell in respect of its national freedom, we are confident that a Torah of truth, which came from a holy mouth, will have its era – and this era is coming and drawing near.”From Letter to Bnei Akiva, 5697
There is a deep difference between an idea that failed because it is false, and an idea that failed because its time had not yet come. Rabbi Akiva, one of the greatest leaders of Judaism in all the generations, saw in Bar Kochba a real possibility of redemption, to the point that our Sages describe that he was 'his arms-bearer.' But Bar Kochba fell, the Land was destroyed, and the people of Israel again lost their national freedom. This moment could break a person, for if even Rabbi Akiva erred, what shall we say?! Rav Kook does not erase the failure – it was not an illusion that burst, nor a mistake of Rabbi Akiva, but a truth that came before its time. There are dreams that break in order to be clarified, in order to deepen their root, in order to return at the right time and with greater force. The challenge is not to despair. To learn to recognize the moment, but not to give up on the vision and on the possibility of changing reality!
