Parashat Beha'alotcha
„The holiness of the generation of the desert demanded unity... and they wanted specifically that Moses feed them meat, and that he enter to illuminate within the insolence.”From Shemonah Kevatzim VIII, 157
Precisely when the journey to the Land of Israel begins, difficult forces erupt within the people of Israel: complaints, desires, confusion, challenges to Moses, prophecy outside the camp, and Miriam's flawed speech. From the outside this looks like a fall and a crash, but Rav Kook reveals that within all of this hides a deep demand of life, from a people whose very essence is life. Redemption is not born only out of perfect order and quiet obedience, but also out of the raw forces of reality, out of insolence, storm, and an inner will that does not yet know how to express itself properly. The light of the Messiah is not alarmed by these broken places, because it comes to reveal that within the soul of Israel there is a holiness deeper than any external corruption. A holiness that demands its place even in vessels whose essence is brokenness – at the end of which there is building.
