„Natural morality is the foundation of everything, and proper conduct…”

„Natural morality is the foundation of everything, and proper conduct (derech eretz) preceded the Torah.”From Notebook 5, 125

Derech eretz, the conduct of a repaired and orderly world, preceded the Torah. And without derech eretz there is no Torah. For one who has no basis of manners and proper conduct cannot enter into the world of Torah; and also because a world that is not repaired, that lacks the technical conditions, cannot hold great ideas, however great they may be. Natural morality is the basis for derech eretz. On the one hand – 'man is born a wild donkey'; man is wild, a beast. But on the other hand, we all have a human mechanism that also contains a side of repair. A natural side of aspiration toward the good. The more we connect to natural morality, the more we give this morality its place and its greatness, the more the place of derech eretz will grow. Of a basic and true repair for which there is no substitute.
