To Recognize Your Powers

„The greater a person is, the more he must search for himself; the more his deep soul is hidden from his own recognition.”From Shemonah Kevatzim 8, 149

Precisely a person who has talent, depth, and influence may distance himself from his true inner point. And why? Because the doing, the successes, and the external power fill his consciousness with constant noise, and he begins to identify himself through his roles, his achievements, and the responses from his surroundings, instead of through the inner voice that truly directs his life. Therefore the Rav emphasizes that the great person must increase in solitude, that is, to create for himself fixed times of quiet without distractions, to deepen his thought about the direction in which he is going, and to free himself from fixed opinions about himself, in order to allow the soul to shine upon him a little of the radiance of its light. The practical work here is not to diminish yourself but to become a person who truly labors, one who succeeds in setting aside envy, competition, and image, and returns again and again to the simple place where he asks himself honestly what is right for me now and how do I live my truth within daily life.
