The Root of Truth

„No wisdom contradicts wisdom, no uprightness contradicts uprightness, no beauty contradicts beauty, and no truth contradicts truth.”From Shemonah Kevatzim III, 113

We live in a world with many disputes. Each side is certain that it represents the truth, and every argument feels like a collision between two worlds. But Rav Kook surprises us. He writes that truth does not contradict truth. Genuine wisdom too does not contradict genuine wisdom. So where do all the contradictions come from, when there are two truths at war with one another? Rav Kook explains that they are not in the essence, but in the 'garment' of things. Truth descends into the world through people, opinions, styles, and personalities, and there it already appears in different garments. We encounter the garment, and think it is the thing itself. And when we grasp the garment, the contradictions begin. The more we remain on the surface, the more the disputes multiply. The more we delve into the root of things, the more the unity that was there all along becomes clear.
