The Month of Shevat

„The desire to plant trees stems from the wish to benefit the coming generations, whose essential force is most pronounced in the carob tree.”From Meged Yerachim, Month of Shevat

When we plant a tree, we invest in the future. The investment is in time, in money, in toil - and until the fruits arrive, if they arrive, it takes a long time. And yet, there is within us a wondrous mechanism that wishes to do good and to create a better world going forward, and therefore we plant. For deep within us we are optimistic creatures, and this wish to do good in something that is not immediately "profitable" for us creates a better world - both in the present and in the future.
