The Tenth of Tevet

„The elders who transmitted the pearls were hidden away; in the Greek translation they were preserved for exile; God's Torah they concealed, they showed only the arks.”From Meged Yerachim, Tevet

The translation of the Torah into Greek is a genuine tragedy for the people of Israel, and one of the events on account of which we fast on the Tenth of Tevet. The Torah was indeed translated, but its soul was hidden away. Because the Torah is not merely written words, but a whole "PaRDeS" - Pshat (plain meaning), Remez (hint), Drash (exposition), and Sod (secret). A depth that lives in the language itself and cannot be dryly transferred to a foreign tongue. The struggle is not against translation as such, but over the preservation of the inner layers of the Torah. Therefore, when the elders were forced to translate, they preserved the outer form and deliberately concealed the depth, which can be understood only in the Holy Tongue. The revival of Hebrew in our generation is not merely a national phenomenon, but a spiritual rectification. The return of the Torah to its natural language, to the place where the plain and the inner, the word and the soul, meet once again.
