The Source of the Good

„And from the source of humility come will and holiness.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, V:25

After describing the root of decline, Rav Kook marks out the opposite movement. Humility is not self-erasure but the knowledge that there is a source of life greater than us. This knowledge opens the soul and allows the will to be a clear will, one that does not push out of fear but draws out of truth. From this will holiness is born, because a person acts once more from an upright, quiet and directed place. When there is humility, a person knows that he is part of reality but is not alone within it. And thus hope surrounds a person, penetrates his thoughts and lifts his gaze forward. Thus a new outlook awakens upon all of life - life becomes happy, and everything appears worthy of love. Life does not turn into a constant drama, but into a whole course that has God within it. If we desire deep mending and change, we must shift the angle in our lives from pride to humility.
