A Torah of Life
„The abundant practicality of the Torah, the multitude of Torah and commandments, comes from that great fullness of the sap of life.”From Shemonah Kevatzim VII, 155
Here Rav Kook reveals the heart of the difference between Christianity and Judaism. Christianity sought God outside the world, in asceticism, in withdrawal, in the renunciation of the body. Judaism discovered God within the world: in food, in love, in work, in family, in the working of the land, in everything that breathes life. The commandments were not meant to flee from reality but to illuminate it, to turn every everyday act into an encounter with the Holy One, blessed be He.
The richer the soul, the more ways it needs to express the light within it, and therefore there are so many commandments. Every deed is a gateway, and every gateway is an invitation: to find the Holy One, blessed be He, within our lives.
