Sound Reason
„Never may the spoken or written word block sound reason.”From Shemonah Kevatzim I, 278
The Torah does not come to replace the intellect, but to live with it in harmony. There is no verse whose purpose is to seal a person's eyes from seeing upright reality or to wash away his intellect. Rav Kook teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, gave us not only faith but also sound reason, and they must work together. And the danger is clear: anyone can decide what sound reason is in his own eyes and detach himself from the sources and the tradition. But Rav Kook does not relinquish trust in the power of the intellect, because true faith does not nullify logic but empowers it. This is a deep lesson, both psychological and Torah-based: not to flee from thought, not to fear questions, but to know that sound reason is a divine gift through which the light of the Torah becomes clear.
