The Importance of Gratitude

„The feeling of recognizing goodness is the mightiest of all the feelings of human uprightness, and it is what brings the complete person to the service of God.”From Kovetz Boisk III

The Holy One, blessed be He, watched over us. There was here a real miracle that crossed battle lines and saved a whole people. And within this miracle, emissaries acted: people of science and security, fighters and commanders, engineers and spies, who toiled for decades so that this moment would happen. Rav Kook teaches that recognizing goodness is a feeling of uprightness, among the deepest in the soul. It is what leads a person to the true service of God. And it must resound within us even when it hurts. And the pain is immense, because even now, when we have won, we are burying our dead. And we must live with this duality. To be in sorrow and in thanksgiving. To rejoice with trembling. Knowing that we will continue to fight, and continue to live, and continue to give thanks, even when the heart aches.
