A Nation That Rises Like a Lioness

„The eyes shall be opened, the soul shall become pure, its light shall flash, its flight shall grow, and a created people shall arise, a people great, mighty, and numerous, the light of God upon it and the greatness of a nation its own; like a lioness it shall rise and like a lion it shall lift itself up.”From Shemonah Kevatzim VIII, 126

Suddenly the people arises, in the morning it decides that it is a people and begins to walk... We have taken incomprehensible blows, and in truth we know that we will continue to take them. But this time the blow awakened us. It is hard to wake a lion, but once it awakens no one can overcome it. Our eyes are opening. Something deep in the Israeli consciousness shakes itself, awakens, unites, and grows strong. The bonds of sleep and delusion pass, and we want to overcome evil. Repentance and repair, for Rav Kook, are a symbol of strengthening and growth. It is not for nothing that we take blows or fall or fail. Unfortunately, at times this is the way by which we learn to repair. 'Like a lioness it shall rise, and like a lion it shall lift itself up.'
