„Who has listened to the secret converse of the roar of the world war, the good and the evil as they struggle over the ordering of universality, which in a miniature and pointed form is revealed as a semblance of this same character in the soul of a person, in the war of his outer and inner life.”
When there is war in the world there is a struggle between evil forces and good forces. In addition to all the evil that war reveals, it also reveals displays of might and great revelations that create new life.
And so it also happens in the soul of a person: a war between inner forces that arouse might. The more the evil grows stronger, the more the good forces rise against it and take courage. Like the training of a muscle: the greater the effort, the more the muscle is built.
It is very hard to see, from within the struggle, the lights of the war. It is even hard to think about it. But the Rav teaches us to stop for a moment, to look from the outside, and to try to remember this in difficult times.
