„In uprightness of mind and in good traits there is more faith and divine cleaving than in a verbal, imaginative, sentimental faith.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, I, 234
Faith is not words, but deeds.
An upright person who cares for his surroundings and his friends is a person with whom the spirit of God dwells, and he is a person who believes in the Holy One more than one who in his outward appearance may seem like a great tzaddik but in his inner self is coarse toward society and toward those around him.
The first is surrounded by the Holy One at all times, and so he behaves toward his surroundings. The second is surrounded by his own externality at all times, and so he behaves toward his surroundings.
