„For there is a general moral deficiency in the human species, in that it does not uphold the good and lofty feeling of not taking the life of any living creature for the sake of its needs and pleasures. And the sages...”From Bava Metzia 85a
At times we need to stop for a moment the race of life and look at it from above. With a more sober, wiser view that pauses for a moment and reflects on the various activities we do.
This is what Rav Kook did in his lengthy article 'A Vision of Vegetarianism and Peace.' Rav Kook set forth a vision, and alongside the vision he also set forth a reality, but this did not contradict the ability and the need to set forth a vision for a different future.
The natural compassion that exists toward animals is part of the mending of the world. The thought that animals were created in order to be slaughtered is incorrect, and the Gemara in Bava Metzia opposes this view.
In practice, Rav Kook and his son Rav Tzvi Yehuda were not vegetarians. Even in 'A Vision of Vegetarianism and Peace,' problems that compassion for animals may cause are brought - mainly on the side of hardness of heart toward humanity, and things we see in our generation in which at times animals become more important than human beings or a substitute for them.
But together with this, we must not forget the vision. Just as we must cleave to the vision of peace and goodness and kindness. To remember the goals and aspire to them!
