Mishpetei HaRav Kook / Be Yourself!

„If I am compelled to be a man of strife with the whole world because of the tendency of the deep truth in my soul, which cannot bear any bending of falsehood — it is impossible for me to be another man.”From Chadarav 146

Rav Kook returns again and again in his various writings to the fact that every person has a unique root of soul. In the words brought here, he holds to this line even, seemingly, at moments that are highly controversial. There are those in whose soul the trait of truth may cause great disputes, and even then Rav Kook says that we must cling to our trait. True, the matter is complex. In Middot HaRe'iyah, Rav Kook speaks of the need to distance oneself from arrogance and anger, and from the totality of his writings it is clear that it is of immense importance that a person remain faithful to himself — but that he clarify that these things come not from bad traits but from his good ones.
