It is not right to demand that a person be completely pure in what he does, with no additional intentions. For example: a person who performs an act of kindness and wants it to be known; a person who studies Torah and displays his knowledge in public in order to take pride; a person who helps his fellow, mixed in with a desire that his fellow thank him or help him when he is in need.
Human nature is to seek personal motives as well in what one does.
Many people entered the world of Torah and mitzvot out of arrogance or out of a desire to make an impression. Rav Kook holds that this is entirely natural, and he strengthens his words with the saying: "A person should always occupy himself with Torah and mitzvot even not for their own sake" — that is, it is the way of the world for a person to occupy himself with Torah and mitzvot while also having external motives, and, God willing, "out of doing it not for its own sake, one comes to do it for its own sake": after the deeds the hearts are drawn, and the person will do everything for the sake of Heaven.
But little by little — not to skip levels...
