5 December 2020 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

„We are not at all alarmed by those who frighten us away from the soar…”

„We are not at all alarmed by those who frighten us away from the soaring of thought, by those who say that we presume to ascend to the heights of the heavens with no ladder. It is not so: we have a ladder set upon the earth whose top reaches the heavens—the luminary within our soul, within the soul of the collective and the soul of the individual, which will awaken beautifully...”From Shemonah Kevatzim, I, 9

In our world there are quite a few wing-clippers—those who, knowingly and unknowingly, try to stop us from flying high, high, and from aspiring to more and more. The arguments of those clippers are always logical: they are for our benefit, they fear that we will fall too fast, they guard us and protect us.

In the world of Torah too there are these clippers, who try to limit and lower those who try to reach higher in the 'soaring of thought.'

It is true that there are studies, and there are things in life, in which one must be more careful; but together with this, the inner will is something that one must listen to—with care and with guidance—for the inner burning is what will make us soar and advance us.

The inner will of the soul is a great luminary, an immense power; we must not stop this power. If we feel a burning and a great will to advance, we must do so—with care, with faith, with love, with courage, and more than anything with an openness of heart and mind.
