„...even though the Torah and the commandments refine the character traits...”From Shemonah Kevatzim, I, 277
The holy Torah and the commandments guard a person from falling into bad character traits; a person for whom the Torah is a true part of his life will generally tend toward the positive side and be a pleasant and agreeable person to others.
Along with this, life shows us that this is not always true, and at times there is a great desecration of God's name when a Torah person falls and displays traits that are not good.
Rav Kook says that a person must engage, in addition to Torah study and the performance of commandments, also in the repair and improvement of his character traits.
Just as a person is meticulous every day to put on tefillin and to bless, let him be meticulous to show a pleasant face to the members of his household and to bless them; just as he is meticulous to run to perform a commandment, let him be meticulous to run and to be part of the doing within his own home; just as he is meticulous with a minor commandment as with a major one, let him guard himself from falling into the trait of anger; just as a woman is meticulous about lighting Shabbat candles in her home, let her be meticulous not to fall into the trait of pride; and in short - just as we are meticulous about commandments, let us also be meticulous about our character traits and our relationship to others.
A pleasant day to all!
