„The aspiration specifically for great things - for great creations, for great sciences, for great levels - empties a person of his inner core, which is in fact built up specifically from constant trickles that come without cease, little by little.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, VIII, 38
At times, precisely the desire to be the very best causes us to fall.
We must remember that what makes a person greater than anything is the daily routine, the small deeds, the small joys, the small pains.
The desire to do everything big and fast leaves a person empty, like a balloon that has been inflated more and more until it bursts.
Rav Kook of course does not oppose people who wish to be great, to do things big. In this passage he explains that the path to greatness passes through routine and normative reality. The aspiration specifically to be great - that is, our orientation specifically toward greatness - is liable to make us fall.
