78 Years of Israel's Independence
„They ask: by what merit did our generation attain redemption?... Because it engaged in the greatest of all the mitzvot, the mitzvah that is weighed against the whole Torah, because it engaged in the redemption of Israel... And this divine power lifts it up and exalts it in salvation.”From Shemonah Kevatzim VII, 201
By what merit did our generations attain what our fathers dreamed of for thousands of years and did not attain? How does it happen that precisely a complex, argumentative, distant generation is the one that returns to the Land, establishes a state, fights for it, and continues to build it day by day. And the answer is built, of course, upon the path that our fathers too took, and alongside this, because of the very decision not to stand aside. Because of the willingness to enter into the story of the people of Israel and to bear it upon its shoulders. Redemption is not a prize received when one reaches a perfect state. It is a process built out of life, out of action, out of responsibility. We are all part of this great process, for the very encounter, the very argument, the very demand for truth, refine the path and force it to be deeper and cleaner. On this Independence Day, within a reality that gives no rest, within a pain that is still present, there is one thing that cannot be ignored. We are part of the story. Each in his own way, each from his own place, each with his struggles and doubts – but inside.
