Fog

„Essential sufferings, in which the soul is scorched because the sin pains it, for it is against all the conditions of its life – and these sufferings themselves refine it.”From Orot HaTeshuvah 8, 2

We live in days and a period of fog. We do not know what tomorrow will bring, we do not know whether this is routine or a moment before a storm. Rav Kook teaches that this is not only an external fear. These sufferings do not come only from reality, but from the soul itself, which feels a lack of alignment, a gap between what is meant to be and what is actually happening. This fog is the pain of a truth that has not yet become clear. The soul is scorched because something deep within it demands order, demands direction, demands repair. And the good tidings are that even within the very lack of knowledge, a process is taking place. The sufferings do not break; they refine. Precisely out of the fog, the path becomes clear.
