Fathers and Sons
„In the fathers the light of Torah grows stronger; in the sons, the light of the holy Israelite nature; and this will shine forth at the End of Days in their joining.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, V, 110
Rav Kook describes here a process of redemption that unfolds through the generations and through the soul. The fathers bear the light of Torah: tradition, study, guarding the form and the covenant. The sons bear the light of the holy Israelite nature: vitality, courage, connection to life, to the land, and to the inner forces. The tension between them exists as a necessary stage toward the goal. When Torah is severed from life it withers, and when life is severed from Torah it becomes confused. Redemption is not the nullification of one of the sides but a deep joining between them, and a stage in which Torah shines forth out of life and nature itself becomes holy.
