A State with a Soul
„The state is not the highest happiness of man... unlike a state that is fundamentally ideal... and this state is our state, the State of Israel, the foundation of God's throne in the world.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, I:186
An ordinary state is a bundle of budgets, laws and endless deliberations, a kind of large insurance company that organizes life so that we do not collide with one another. But there is a state in whose essence a supreme ideal is inscribed, a state whose existence was born out of the longings of generations for a world in which the great values of good, justice and holiness emerge from potential into actuality. Such a state is not merely a framework but a national soul that seeks mending. Even in days of darkness, when the light is hard to see, the very existence of the State of Israel carries within it the future direction of unity and of redemption, and therefore it remains the place where a person can sense the pinnacle of human happiness.
