Reviver of the Spirit

„When the spirit collapses, a person is brought low. The question of life turns entirely into a lowly, mechanical question: how does one obtain wood to fire the small stove, to warm through it the house of matter that is 'the human being'... and he also needs the means that seal the windows, through which rays of light enter.”From Eder HaYakar I

When the spirit grows weak, life shrinks to questions of bread, money, and survival. Worse still, we ourselves seal the windows, so that rays of light will not disturb us. Culture turns into entertainment through which we numb the pain, routine hides the soul, and the memory that we once knew how to fly is gradually forgotten. Rav Kook reminds us that the human being is not merely a house of matter. We have wings, desire, and the power to fly, but when we let our feet sink into the mud, we lose our most natural ability to rise and be charged with spirit.
