9 March 2013 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

„The separation of good from evil is the teaching of life, and the mos…”

„The separation of good from evil is the teaching of life, and the most all-encompassing problem in the science of ethics. The counsels and practical guidance — whether of deed or of thought, of feeling or of aspiration, private and general, personal and communal — by which each person strikes at the good and at the evil according to his own nature: when one strengthens, one should strengthen the good alone, so that the evil not draw nourishment from it; and when one weakens, one should weaken the evil, so that the good not suffer from it. This is the great generality of all the light of material life, which encompasses all. (Shemonah Kevatzim 5:85.)”

The ability to separate the good from the evil without harm is a teaching of life. The ability to know how to peel away the husk of evil without damaging the good, to elevate the good without elevating the evil — this is an immense teaching from which we must draw.

To know how to accept all of reality, and from within it to sift the chaff from the wheat, to clarify the husks and leave the good and the beautiful.

A good and blessed week.

In memory of Shlomo ben Shimon.
