3 November 2024 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

The Month of Marcheshvan

„And if, out of the greatness of the soul, the sickness of the body may increase – for with much wisdom comes much anger, and he who increases knowledge increases pain – let us not recoil from the light of knowledge, but rather increase its flame. We know that these sufferings are the birth-pangs of creation.”From Shemonah Kevatzim IV, 85

Well known is the motto of the month of Marcheshvan, "When the soul illumines, even skies wrapped in fog produce a pleasant light," but what does one do when the soul is truly in pain?? The Rav explains that pain is a result of growth. Of advancement, of strengthening. And the pain is understandable, and at times it is unbearable. But the answer is not to stop growing, but to continue, and in our growth to heal the pain as well.
