1 December 2016 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

„Among all the evil traits there is none that materializes a person so…”

„Among all the evil traits there is none that materializes a person so that he cannot elevate his spirit to the glory of spirituality, like pride.”From Middot HaRe'iyah, Pride, 2

The trait of pride, as we have already noted here in the past, is an evil and difficult trait, more extreme than all the other traits.

In this passage Rav Kook explains that pride causes a person to degenerate. The proud person does not manage to advance, to elevate his spirit, to touch the spirit, since he thinks that he is higher than everyone.

Our ability to advance comes precisely out of an understanding of what we need to improve, to be better, to develop. When we are proud, this does not happen; we have reached the 'glass ceiling' of ourselves.
