28 March 2024 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

Parashat Tzav

„If everyone who extinguishes a coal from upon the physical altar transgresses the prohibition of 'a perpetual fire shall burn upon the altar, it shall not be extinguished,' how much more so one who extinguishes a supernal spiritual coal from upon the spiritual altar, full of holy life - the heart of Israel.”From Orot HaKodesh III:210

In this week's portion we speak of the perpetual fire. The Rav derives from this that we must be careful and guard ourselves from extinguishing. Not to extinguish children, not to extinguish enthusiasm, not to extinguish elevation of spirit and hope. When we extinguish the perpetual fire we halt the possibility of advancement; whereas when we fan it and add to it fuel and burning, we give hope for a better future. Our deeds, spiritual and practical, help the perpetual fire to burn - and cause those who wish to extinguish it to despair.
