Sukkot

„The sukkah is for us a fortress of protection... not because of the material strength of its flimsy, weak walls, but because the law, the word of God, is what decreed that in the days of this holy festival, the Festival of Ingathering, this is our dwelling place.”From Ma'amrei HaRe'iyah, Sukkot

On this joyous festival we have moved our home to the courtyard. And this courtyard is our fortress in this special week of Sukkot, in this unique mitzvah that has no parallel among other nations. It is incumbent upon us to remember that what turns a rickety sukkah into a fortress is the fact that we were commanded about it, and by the very force of this mitzvah, rickety walls turn into a fortified stronghold. And so too when we stand in hard times facing an enemy: what will protect us and give strength to our soldiers and to the strong and important weapons of war is the fact that we are faithful to the word of God.
