Mishpetei HaRav Kook / Educating Humanity

„Divine wisdom saw that man had fallen from his moral state, and until the time comes when he rouses himself and attains true moral awareness, one must not impose upon him what is beyond his measure.”From LeNevuchei HaDor 10

At the creation of the world and of humanity, human beings did not eat animals. Then man fell in his moral state and erred in understanding the differences between man and beast, and the eating of animals was permitted so that man would retain the capacity to separate and distinguish between eating human flesh and eating animal flesh. We must be careful not to blur the delicacy that was imprinted at the creation of the world, and to beware of cruelty toward animals — to remember that the permission was given for the sake of strengthening morality and not for undermining it.
