Mishpetei HaRav Kook / Rebuke
„One must examine the ways of people when they wish to rebuke some person in order to turn him from his path — perhaps this path is good for him according to his situation, even though...”From Middot HaRe'iyah, Tochachah
The commandment of rebuke is one of the most limited in our world. At its basis it requires love and sincere concern for the object of the criticism — both so that it will be accepted and so that it will be true and fitting. And it requires context, a proper connection to the world of the one being criticized, so as to verify that the criticism is indeed correct for him. People are different. What is right for one differs for another. At the basis of the Rav's words is the need to know well the person we are criticizing — "do not judge a person until you reach his place" — and to know that the things we say are indeed suitable and correct.
