„We can find an enlightened slave whose spirit is full of freedom, and…”

„We can find an enlightened slave whose spirit is full of freedom, and the reverse — a free man whose spirit is the spirit of a slave. Essential (i.e., substantive) freedom is that lofty spirit by which a person, and likewise the nation as a whole, is elevated to be faithful to its inner selfhood... (Introduction to the Passover Haggadah)”

Toward the great summer vacation, let us study what freedom is...

Rav Kook teaches us that freedom is an inner place in which a person dwells. I can be on vacation but be a slave to many things. I can think that no one rules over me and idle all day, and in fact by this I have become a slave to the idleness within me.

In order to be free, we must work on our inner selves.

Have a pleasant rest of the day.

For the recovery of Yael bat Sara.
