The Human Struggle
„A person always strives to attain inner wholeness within himself, if only the distresses of his soul would cease from him.”From Orot Yisrael, VI
The Rav explains that within us there is a constant struggle between evil and good. On the one hand, "a tendency to fulfill every aspiration of evil, every lowest of desires, whether from the side of matter or from the side of the spirit..." and on the other hand, "the aspiration for good... to enlighten it and better it, and to fill it with loving-kindness, love, and light." And this struggle taking place within us consumes our strength, since both sides seek a deep aspiration that exists within us – the side of good and the side of evil. And the more we succeed in cleaving to the good, the more the tendency of the aspiration for evil diminishes. "And you shall choose life."
