To Beware of Lowliness of Spirit
„One must fear lowliness more than exaltedness.”From Shemonah Kevatzim I, 894
One of the highest character traits is the trait of humility, and its importance for a person's advancement is immense. But alongside this, the Rav warns of the trait of lowliness. Of a lowness of spirit that is liable to cause us inaction and paralysis. When we are haughty about something, it is not positive and does not advance us, but when we debase ourselves, we are liable to reach a state many times more difficult. Humility – yes; understanding our place – yes; but not lowliness!
