Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day
„In this the sinners of Israel corrupted, and went out to imitate the nations deliberately in order to resemble them, mistakenly thinking that by flattering them and behaving according to their customs they would cease to hate them and would attain rights; and in the end many of them went out to apostasy and assimilation among the nations.”From Orach Mishpat, p. 50
Germany of the beginning of the last century was the cradle of the global cultural movement. Rav Kook, who passed away before the terrible Holocaust, spoke of the German nation, and of the European nations in general, as ones whose lives are led by hatred of Jews. In response to a question about playing the organ in a synagogue, the Rav gave this answer, and warned that flattery of the nations would not advance love but would increase hatred, and could bring spiritual and physical destruction.
