Parashat Yitro

„The divine thought is fixed in a particular, familiar form among human beings on account of habit and childish imagination. This is a spark of the flaw of making a graven image and a likeness.”From Yissurim Memarkim

In this week's portion we read the Ten Commandments. Among them two basic commands: "I am the Lord... you shall have no other gods before Me." On the surface, these are commands concerning idolatry that are irrelevant to our day. In depth, they are the most relevant. Sometimes the image of "God" in our head is not the Holy One, but our soul's cravings, thoughts we developed and attached to an idol we set up for ourselves, and a fixation into which we lock ourselves. And this fixation is an immense danger to our existence, upon which a stop sign hangs. How critical these things are to understand now, after conceptions and perceptions that took root in Israeli and global society, which claims to know all, and which is revealed in its nakedness before the evil.
