Parashat Vayishlach

„Coarse nature made us into the maimed, touched the hollow of our thigh; but the sun is surely ours — it has risen to heal us of our limping.”From Orot HaTechiyah 30

In this week's parashah the struggle of Yaakov with the angel of Esav is described. Yaakov emerges limping and wounded from the struggle. Rav Kook emphasizes that our limping is a temporary state that cannot continue for long. In nature too we must prevail, and not only in spirit — for this is the essence of the people of Israel: the union of matter and spirit, the union of the worlds that envelop our lives. "The young spirit that demands its land, its language, its freedom and its honor, its literature and its strength, its property, its feelings — these flow through a torrent of nature, whose inwardness is full of holy fire." The complete redemption and victory will come when we succeed in ceasing to limp — in matter and in spirit!
