The Festival of Sukkot

„Because joy is renewal, and here the renewal is constant...”From Olat Re'iyah, 'And you shall rejoice before the Lord'

The eve of Sukkot, a festival on which we are commanded to rejoice. What is unique about the festival of Sukkot that precisely on it there is a command to rejoice? On Sukkot we renew ourselves. We go outside. We celebrate with nature a moment before it enters its winter slumber. We arrive at Sukkot after the resolving of the doubts of the Days of Awe. We did all we could, and now we return to the routine of life. And joy is obligatory to life.
