Rav Kook's Sayings / Where Is the Spirit?

„What shall we do when the somber grief over the emptying of the spirit stands before us — is this not the depth of the cup of my grief? And what can the consolations of enterprises and the building of ruins do to delight my soul, if within the building I see a burning fire, going on and destroying?!”From Article 'Nachamu Ami' ('Comfort My People')

We established a state, we returned home, but where is the spirit? Can we see physical and material success as something to rejoice in, when we see before our eyes the emptying of the spirit? The crashing of values? Rav Kook offers comfort in the continuation of the article, but emphasizes the acute need for a soul — for values, for Torah and proper conduct alongside the material needs. May we merit to be like a magnificent building that also stands firmly on its foundation, with spirit and soul.
