Mishpetei HaRav Kook / Small Opinions

„Most confusions come into the world only because of people who content themselves with fixed and limited opinions and do not wish to trouble their power of thought to roam through the entire expanse of the idea in its pure nature. Therefore, when they innovate — or imagine that they innovate — some thought, they cannot reconcile it at all with the foundational matters bequeathed to the nation, and they then argue, of necessity, for tearing the nation into factions.”From LeNevuchei HaDor 53

There are disputes within the people of Israel. There always have been. When a dispute is conducted honestly and uprightly, it is a substantive dispute whose aim is to strive toward the truth. But when a dispute becomes driven by ego and personal passion, it can turn and swallow all those who are divided and disputing within it. If we desire life, we must listen — to understand that a true solution lies in the capacity for genuine listening and constant, genuine examination. Otherwise, the earth will swallow us all!
