Mishpetei HaRav Kook / The Greatness of the Small Commandments
„At the moment... when one is able to look upon the Torah and the commandments with a more holy and lofty gaze, the particular commandments become small in his eyes, and toward them laziness and disregard are revealed.”From LeNevuchei HaDor 47
Rav Kook saw his generation (and, in my humble opinion, based on his words we should see our own generation this way all the more) as one that thirsts for great things. And as part of this greatness, which lifts those within it to tremendous heights, the commandments can become a secondary, small, and irritating factor. In the practical commandments, alongside their private and personal aspect, there is a general, national, and generational aspect. Therefore, when we abandon the world of the commandments, we may find ourselves in terrible falls and disconnection because of that abandonment. How do we repair this? The Rav explains that the path of repair is depth — in the Torah as well: both in the esoteric Torah and in Torah in general, and in understanding the depth of the commandments and their meaning for our lives.
